Lessons from a global pandemic.

Saying that last few months have been eventful will be a huge understatement; what started in a relatively insignificant wholesale food market in Wuhan, China soon engulfed the entire world in form of an unparalleled global pandemic which has claimed the lives of over 700,000 people and infected over 18 million so far. World went in to a localised curfew with countries shutting their borders, companies implementing remote working and hospitals prepping for daily battles against an unknown enemy manifesting itself in multiple forms.

In a matter of weeks, the way we interact and work changed dramatically and things will never be the same, not being overtly pessimistic as change often tends to be a primary driver of innovation. So what have we learnt so far?

Save and invest in yourself, resist the urge to buy unnecessary gadgets (trust me I know it’s difficult, considering the new iPhone is only a month away!) and focus on your health and learning. Having a rainy day fund gives you psychological advantage when planning that next career move, the extra runway means you can hold out longer for relevant and rewarding job offers rather than succumbing to whatever comes first. Invest in online courses, hobbies and focus on your overall growth both spiritually and professionally.

Be humble, kind and considerate because none of these qualities cost a dime. It was unfortunate to see people hoarding supplies, fighting over food and toilet paper in supermarket aisles and being unbelievably selfish by refusing to wear masks. Social capital is not an abstract concept, the collective altruistic behaviour of the medical staff played a crucial role in saving thousands of lives. Do your bit and wear a mask!

Times might be tough, resources scarce and future uncertain but together we will prevail like we always have in the past for many centuries. Hope trumps fear!
