Why You Want to Embrace the Hard Times

My client had been having a particularly rough few weeks — he’d lost a significant client; he had another that he kind of wanted to poke in the eye because there was no satisfying her, no matter what he did; communication was going a little sideways with a new client; there were some team troubles and he’d come to the realization that the business wasn’t quite going in the direction he wanted. He was getting to the point where he just didn’t want to come into the office everyday.

“Wouldn’t it be nice if everything just ran smoothly? Forever?” he said.

I think that’s something we all long for, especially those of us who own businesses.

When things are running smoothly, we’re happy with the status quo. There’s no reason to make a change. But in business and in life, it’s that status quo that’s a killer, lulling you into a habitual way of living that’s little better than a drone’s. It’s okay. But it’s not brilliant.

It’s from my personal lowest of lows that I’ve been able to reach the highest of highs.

The changes I made put me where I am now and that’s a pretty darn good place, even in the most challenging times.

When you can embrace that concept, you get a whole new spin on the hard times.

As humans, we’re built to move away from pain. That makes sense from a survival stand point. But when you can move away from the pain and get a clear picture of what can make this better, you can move your life in a whole new direction. One that makes you much happier.

For my client, when his significant client walked, he took a step back and considered what went wrong. There were some big learning lessons that pointed to gaps in procedures and in the chain of execution for projects. From there, he put some new protocols in place and used those new protocols to improve the relationship with the client who had communication issues.

The client that was a huge irritant, made him zero in what he really wanted his business to do and who he wanted to work with. The service that he was offering was one he really hated doing. It didn’t allow him to use his or his company’s real talents. He decided to let the client go and stop that service, so he could focus on the real direction he wanted to take his business.

Focusing in on the business and the new direction, he realized he had a team member who didn’t fit the vision or the culture. That person had to go and it completely changed the dynamics of his team — for the better.

Those three weeks of really hard times had him taking his business in a whole new direction. But without the hard times, he would have stuck with a mediocre business that was doing just okay. And that wasn’t his big picture goal.

Instead, he now has a business that really showcases its talents because it’s completely focused in one direction. His clients are happier. His team is happier. He wants to come to work every day and the business is far more profitable.

Which is exactly why you want to embrace the hard times.
