The value of doing nothing

When was the last time you deliberately set a time to do nothing? and I mean nothing like no music or reading. I mean just sitting there with your thoughts. I’m guessing the answer is rarely or not at all.

We live in an age of bombardment and saturation, we are continuously surrounded by distractions either by our tech devices or reacting to irrelevant news.

The second we wake up we immediately reach for our phone and start checking our emails and social media accounts.

By checking or glancing at our phones first thing in the morning, we put ourselves on high alert and in a reactionary mode, which could ruin our day simply by looking at an unpleasant email or news.

Even when we try to free our minds by taking a walk, we are still compelled to check our devices, by doing this we are less engaged with the world around us, and we miss certain moments.

Let me give you an example: a couple of months ago I was taking a walk with a friend in financial district NYC, we were about to cross to the other side of the road, then she suddenly got a compliment about the blue sneakers she was wearing that day, but she was so concentrated on her phone that she missed the compliment totally, I had to tap her on the shoulder to bring her back to the real world, I told her about what had just happened, and when she looked back, the person was gone. that moment was gone

Just by looking up and being present, we have the ability to witness beautiful things that so many others miss.

We feel that by multitasking, we can get a lot more done, but the reality is that we are actually rather bad at it. Research has shown that productivity and attention reduce when we try to multitask.

This frees up our unconscious to work on something else. Your mind goes wandering, leaving your brain the platform to wander and explore different ideas with no restrictions.

This process of non-focus allows the brain to go into a brainstorming daydreaming state. This frees up the brain to be creative and think about new pathways to discover.

We have been brainwashed by society into believing that we must always be productive and efficient, deeming the idea of doing nothing unproductive.

whenever we have time left unfilled during the day, there's a certain urge to do something with it rather than squander it.

Now, close your eyes if you feel comfortable, and then simply do nothing.

After 5–10 minutes of doing nothing, stop and observe how you feel. There will be many feelings and thoughts that arise, just observe them all without judgment.

I would also recommend having a note and a pen with you when you perform the art. The finest ideas appear to emerge from such occasions.

But try to do this every day, or as much as possible in order to build the habit of doing nothing.

I appreciate you taking your time and reading this; please share it with your friends and family if you found it helpful.

Thank you and have a nice day!
