Is YouTube Good or Bad for Your Mental Health?

When it comes to YouTube, many individuals debate whether it is good or bad for your mental health. Unlike social media websites such as Instagram and Facebook, YouTube is shown to have a positive effect overall. However, there are also downsides to using YouTube.

While YouTube is great at allowing people to express themselves, others may argue that YouTube does more harm to your mental health than good. If someone spends so much time on YouTube per se, it can affect their sleep schedule. Many content creators on YouTube are up late at night working on their videos. Viewers can be up all night watching interesting videos to the point where they don’t want to go to bed. As a result, they get little to no sleep. Also, anytime a video is posted to YouTube, there won’t always be friendly comments. As a result, someone’s feelings can get hurt. Therefore, content creators tend to try their hardest to impress their viewers. Not everyone will like what you post and agree with your points. As a result, your mental health can get messed up.

For example, Sean Chandler was up at 1 a.m. working on a video and didn’t fall asleep until a little later. Due to Sean being up so late, he was tired the next day. Since Sean has so many subscribers, he always has to ensure enough content is posted to his channel so viewers won’t unsubscribe or think he’s slacking. On a side note, some rude people sometimes insult Sean’s other viewers or spoil something on one of his reviews meant to be spoiler-free. As a caution, Sean always warns everyone not to look at the comment section if the viewer hasn’t seen the movie or show yet.

Despite the hateful comments and having the most negative effect on sleep, YouTube is a social media platform with a positive impact overall. It has the best self-expression out of all social media platforms, and people can discover something they could potentially be good at. Unlike other social media platforms such as Facebook and Snapchat, many advantages come with the platform, such as entertainment for children and finding videos on how to do something. As a result, YouTube should stay around so individuals can learn to come together as a strong community.
