Love is Awkward

Part Two in a series

The following is a true story. Only the names have been changed to protect the guilty.

We had only met the night before and all I had now was an email address and a foggy memory that we might have had a good time. Thinking that I was probably screwing things up, I went ahead and wrote her an email anyway:

I winced and hit “Send”.

I checked for her reply a number of times after that but soon it was Sunday morning which quickly became Sunday afternoon. Not wanting my hopes to be dashed too many times, I decided not to check email too often.

By Sunday evening I had only gotten on the computer about 38 times. Still nothing — I never knew that crickets could keep a song going for that long. And now it was time to get ready for Monday morning. God how I hate Sundays.

I awoke Monday to dreary skies, rain and the work week. I checked email again and the crickets were still there, but now somewhat muted by the rain. The weather was appropriate — it just doesn’t seem right to feel lonely on a sunny day.

By Tuesday it was starting to sink in. I wasn’t even sure if we’d had fun on Friday or if I’d just imagined it. And besides, did I just say “lonely”? Where the hell did that come from? I was fine before Friday night came along. Maybe I should have been designated driver — at least I’d have a clearer picture of how it all went down.

Wednesday the crickets were still there but I wasn’t paying them much attention. I didn’t like their song anyway so I was getting better at tuning them out.

On Thursday I was done. I shouldn’t have sent that email — I knew that even as I was writing it. “Live and learn” I said… (and this time I’m really gonna learn).

Friday I woke up feeling free, if maybe a little empty inside. Not hearing the crickets anymore I turned on the computer and:
