The Kick Off Meeting

As soon as we start talking, I learn that the stated goal for the first meeting was to figure out how to put together a “maker space” and these are the tasks for the day:

As we started talking about it, the team soon realizes that we probably need to figure out which types of projects they want to work on for us to figure out supplies and the maker space itself!

Lesson #1: the “what” matters!

As we start going down the road of talking about project, the suggestion of focusing on “low-tech” projects come up, and then the question: “Is there any problem we can solve within their classroom?”. The answer: preventing their work benches from falling down. What a cool idea! We start talking about why the benches fall, and gravity and friction come up, thus the solution could either be hanging the benches or what we settled later on: gluing rubber patches to the benches’ feet.

Now we were coming up with a list of project ideas and did not yet have made sufficient progress towards the meeting’s goal: the maker space, so we get back t focus on that and the list of materials…

As we are talking about the maker space, we decide to stand up and look at their current space and brain storm how it could be improved. After a few minutes we are back to the feeling that we have making little progress…

Lesson #2: we will need to iterate on the how and what simultaneously, as one depends on the other.

By the end of the meeting it is clear that we need some way to help the kids organize themselves so they can consistently make progress.

Well, that is my task for next week: come up with a simplified way to apply Scrum to our STEAM Committee.
