You Witnessed a UFO

An American haiku for the “Unexplained” prompt

In my 30s, I had a friend in his 80s. He was a fun, smart person with rich, diverse stories.

He had a memory of seeing a large UFO in the 1950s. Nobody could convince him he’d witnessed — and miscategorized — something from this planet.

During the time I knew him, I saw a large, dark object against a light-gray sky one day. Shaped differently from things we normally see in the sky, it was a curious sight.

I soon saw it clearly, though. It was a string of huge, round balloons that had probably escaped a car lot.

The next day, I told my friend about this sighting. I insisted that he must have had a similar experience. He insisted otherwise — other-wordly!

Personally, I am fascinated at the diverse ways we experience this world we share. Why we each see what we want remains unexplained.
