Used in batteries for years, they have great ability to hold a charge (up to 10x longer than traditional lithium-ion) with increased longevity. This could mean that graphene batteries have the potential to be charged in a matter of seconds with virtually no deterioration from charge to charge. The potential is huge for a multitude of markets from cell phones to electric cars.

If that’s not interesting enough, when graphene is mixed with pure lime, it creates what The Graphene Company claims is the most sustainable and eco-friendly paint in the world.”

Lime is known for it’s ability to absorb CO2, which means Graphenstone’s 98% lime content also purifies the air. The paint is odorless and emits no VOC’s, two features behind the company’s claim that you can put a baby to sleep in a freshly painted room.

In 2014, researchers at the University of Michigan found that sandwiching two layers of graphene in between a contact lens enabled wearers to see infrared light.

Graphene’s electrical and magnetic properties could be used for integration of LED lighting, or even circuits that can measure the glucose level in tears for diabetics. The applications for this super-material have come a long way since the graphene light bulb (which we covered in our summer 2015 trend report). We’ll be keeping watch for where graphene goes over the next three years.
