ROI of Design Thinking

Design Thinking has been embraced by product teams, pre sales groups, HR teams and all major consultants for their engagements and also as a capability building services.

Its use is spreading virally and people get dopamine rushes after an exciting workshop… but is design thinking making an impact in companies?

She shared how five different practices in Design Thinking, brought in via a series of mechanisms generating the following impact in the organizations observed:

The benefits are there… yet she argues that to take them to scale, “virtual design thinking” needs to become common practice so that its benefits stick.

IBM has been a pioneer in their design led transformation. They have invested in 42 IBM Studios across the world and trained over 100,000 in really great design education programs and the results are starting to pay off their huge investment.

Even though they prefer to meet in person, the reality is that they have a global team of… 400,000 so they need to be able to bridge the physical to digital to innovate and high speed.

When I met with Phil Gilbert in March 2014, his ambition was big and planned likewise: he knew that to get past the tipping point for real change to happen, he had to develop the “Virtual Studios” practice at scale.

4 years later, over 25,000 IBMers collaborate in MURAL monthly in design thinking and agile activities.
