Happy New Year, everyone! As we start to ramp up in 2022, some of you might be looking to broaden your professional networks this year, and that often means reaching out to people on LinkedIn. In 2021, it was clear that people were tired of surface-level transactional connections. In 2022, we can do better.

One of the reasons that LinkedIn can be an effective networking platform is because it allows you to look at a person’s professional profile before making decisions or starting conversations. Despite that, I’m constantly surprised at how many mistakes people make regarding information that’s readily available on my profile when I get connection requests or InMails. If you’re reaching out to new contacts this year, here are a few things to watch out for.

Sending a personal message request is the best way to raise your chances of getting accepted. Personal messages are surprisingly uncommon, so when you write one, you’re much more likely to stand out among the dozens or hundreds of requests someone might get in a week. Giving a quick introduction of who you are and why you’re interested in connecting helps the other party see the value in connecting with you, and writing a sentence or two is so low effort that there’s no reason not to do it.
