7 Mistakes Beginner Freelancers Make

The grass may look greener when you observe the life of a freelancer from the outside. Whenever I visit my parents, my mother never fails to remind me how lucky I am to work for myself — “Kurtis you’re just lucky. You can do whatever you like.” My response, “It’s a good thing I like working.”

Freedom, control, opportunities: it may seem like a godsend, but not everything is how it looks. The land is filled with mines. One wrong footing and your career could be in tatters. Being a freelancer requires the utmost diligence if you want to succeed in the long run — just ask all the people that retreated back to their cubicle when the world reopened.

That’s not to say permanent roles are bad; There’s nothing wrong with being an employee. If you gave freelancing a shot and it wasn’t your forte, props to you for giving it a chance.

The difficult blow to take is when circumstance forces your hand. This is when you’ve unwillingly been forced back into the 9–5 life— that sucks. There may be a number of reasons your case played out the way it did. My goal today is to highlight 7 so you don’t make those mistakes again.

There’s only one scenario in which I think it’s safe to start freelancing without financial backup: when you have absolutely no responsibility. This means someone pays for the roof over your head willingly, they feed you willingly, and they provide for you whenever you’re in need, willingly.

If you don’t tick this box then get saving — a six-month reserve will do.

Having money in the bank is the best leverage. It psychologically places you in a position of power when you’re aware you could survive for months on end without earning a single penny. This is vital for freelance success. The best freelancers know their worth and won’t scramble for change to make ends meet.

Backing yourself financially is one way to always feel more secure — especially during a drought.
