Building network relationships from online courses

My idea of online networking gained a new insight after I completed many online courses (Coursera, Edx, and others that encourages peers to work together.)

The tipping point was when I caught myself inviting a professor, of a Coursera course, to join my LinkedIn. It was a smooth, just as I expected, I needed to have the means to reach that amazing professor. I also believe that it worked because the professor was present at that course and I was an engaged student. While this example is simple, I believe that it serves to better understand that the online learning will be an amazing way to build relationships and that maybe we are yet at the surface of what’s next.

While such awareness happened for me, and perhaps for many students that end up having a great time in the online realm, I don’t think that many people understand that online learning will be one of the strongest means to enrich a personal network.

The problem is that we usually don’t account what kind of interactions are in fact relationship building ones. If we look at a real university space, for example, students leave their universities and they remember their friends, they keep it. So, in reality, we hack the system and grab the relationship with us. Such phenomenon is not only confined to the university scenario. The same, for example, can also occur at a great company: Imagine that Google have a division with a team working a nice project. As they hire more people, looking for certain cultural traits, and as they make an amazing product, they build amazing interactions yet the identifies are built around their ongoing story which much involves their learning. As much as you may remember that company you will in fact remember your friends from that company.

In the end, with time, some of these folks become friends, others will be cofounders, others may even live together. But back to the online realm, do we have this kind of life hacking going on?

In the online realm our ability to notice is very limited — probably much influenced by how poor online interactions are. Most of the online activities tend to give us an idea that we have interacted with an online facet of a human being, such as an interaction with an actual technical insight whereas the identity is not apparent.

With that, we don’t account identities in association with the learning interactions. It’s like we remember the “company” not the friends.
